# Getting Started

To create a new device, click on `Devices` using the side navigation bar and click the ellipses in the top right corner to reveal the device list dropdown. From here click the `+ Create Device` button. You will be taken to a device create form which contains the following parameters.

#### Name

The name should be a unique string identifier used to briefly describe this device.

*i.e. Nitrogen Recovery PLC, Fan Controller #1*

#### Description

The description should be a more detailed string used to describe the device.

*i.e. Allen Bradley Micrologix controller located in panel #4 in the north-west compressor building.*

#### Protocol

Use the dropdown list to select an available protocol that the end device is compatible with.

#### Scan Rate

Enter the interval in seconds that the device should attempt to read/write to the end device.

> The scan rate can be a floating point number. So to achieve a 100ms scan rate, simply enter 0.1 seconds.
