# Device Introduction

### What is a device?

Koios forms connections to physical or virtual network endpoints using devices. Each device object contains unique [protocol](/v1/docs/introduction-4) specific settings to allow a secure connection to be formed. When the device is enabled, a connection is created, and the device will be polled at the desired scan rate in order to read and write data.
