# Testing a Device

Testing a device before putting it online is a quick way to troubleshoot connection issues. At the top of the protocol specific tab, you will see a bar that says “Click here to test”. Clicking this will attempt a connection and return the results as shown below.

A failed test

Use the error message as a guide on what to fix in your connection settings.

> [!WARNING]
> TimeoutError
>
> One of the most common connection failures is a network connection timeout. If you are experiencing a timeout, this just means that Koios was unable to receive a response from your device within the allowed time. Please verify the connection settings and that the device is on the network. Try giving it a ping! If the end device is server based, make sure to check the firewall rules to ensure the port isn’t being blocked.
